Two tales of woe

 After cooking  ugadi lunch i was relaxing with a book when i got the msg that tavarekere govt hospital was sending its staff to our apartment for covid vaccination. I was delighted, for after returning to bengaluru i tried to register, but it said 'no slots available' till june so i had given up. Akka had gone to deliver a cake. Srikanth was advised to do a RTPCR (COVID test) before his gall bladder sugery. So he too was not at home.

I got the shot and quite forgot about it.

Day 2 : As usual got up at 4 , had my tea and went for my walk. Fetched milk. Cooked breakfast. Others were not up yet, so i lay on the diwan with my mobile. When i woke up my mobile had fallen off my hands and time showed 7.30. woke up the family, had breakfast, cleaned the house, had my bath, cooked lunch., Went to get some veggies and tender coconut...slept again till it was time for lunch. Cleaned the kitchen and slept till 4.30. dreamless beautiful sleep all were. In between i was thinking 'waiting for my second shot' and smiling to myself. Finally got to know what 'sleeping like a log' meant. (I have hereditary sleep issues)Had to collect Srikanth's Covid report . They said it will take time. Again i drifted off to sleep and woke up at 6. Went out to draw money, collected his report and purchased some medicines. Skipped dinner . By 9 i was ready to doze off again

Day 3:  woke up at 2.11 am with a pounding headache, as if many pestles were hitting inside  the head. Could not sleep so got up applied some pain balm. The staff had given two tablets to take only in case of fever. I had no fever. But an inch below the spot where i was injected had swollen up like appam...😃

Srikanth was to be admitted to the hospital, so cooked breakfast and lunch to carry to the hospital. By the time headache had subsided by half. By 8 o clock all pain was gone. Swelling subsided and there was dull throbbing ache in the injected arm  

The staff did not tell any of us about the after affects of the shot..and i am not even sure if it was any reaction to the injection

I am the healthiest in my house and hosptal visits are mostly  accompanying the family members. I am not even bothered by common ailments like cold, cough, fever, headache and stomach ache etc.

Oh my i did enjoy my sleep though 😃😃

Day 4 at the hospital. Srikanth had his gall bladder removal surgery. I only remember moving about like a zombie...cranking the bed up and down, giving his piss pot,empty it, cleaning it, once had to fetch the nurse cos his drip was empty. The hospucevwas functioningbwith a skeletal staff due to Cirona. I could hear him moan in pain. Inspite of all this i SLEPT. May be there is a slot in our consciousness where we worry...so that the moment Srikanth said malathi..i was up like a bullet, did my nursing duties and fell asleep 🤔🤔

Utterly grateful that akka is with us. She sent us tasty, hot, home cooked meal three times a day and couriered it via  Vefast/swiggy. Ever grateful to these delivery persons. Life is easy/better becos of them. Our residence is quite some distance from the hospital and I could not have managed cooking, cleaning and hospital duties

Our building is sealed down due to increasing covid cases ..

Also men and women above 50 pls do regular body check up. Srikanth's gall bladder situation was very bad. He had severe pain in the abdomen and We thought it was kidney stone (has previous history)acidity or gastric problem and gave him medicines according to that. Amma's doctor, a homeopath suggested gall bladder scan to rule out gall related issues. Otherwise we had no clue about this. His gall bladder had stones and He had to endure so much pain. All this is unnecessary if diagnosed earlier . I go for regular check up every quarter once i turned 45. Better to be safe than sorry folks. Also it is lesser amount of tension to family members. Some things can be avoided esp in these covid times. He is fine now and recuperating beautifully. All the doctors and staff took good care of  Srikanth

When Corona strikes home

Including Akka, 24

 corona cases in our building. Heard two of them are hospitalized.

Now i think v put her at risk. Cooking and sending parcel via courier services. The lifts are sanitized every two hours. Excepting  a fortnight ago she has hardly stepped outside the building.

When we were ready to get discharged from the hospital she sends me a message 'amma now i have fever'. A day ago she had cold. She has sinusitis problem so i thought she will recover. but when she said fever i intuitively knew she had the virus. We consulted srikanth's doctor. He suggested isolation. I had spare keys with me. I told her to stay in her room and not come out at all. By the time we returned home, she had sanitized the whole house, poor dear and locked herself in her room.

Next day she went for the RTPCR test and i went shopping for essentials. COVID POSITIVE Report came in 4 days due to too much rush. By this time  she already was on medicine and back to recovery.

BBMP has been in constant touch, reassuring her a bed in hospital if she needs one.

Our apartment people send us messages asking if we need anything.

People who have come out of hospital and quarantined at home are complaining of severe body ache and pain in the legs and SOS ing for househelps who are restricted from entering the building. Feels sad. 

At home We move about with masks on. Converse via whatsapp. Thankfully her appetite is good and i cook her favorite dish. It is my turn to look after her.

Hoping to soon have her back in the kitchen, baking, dancing, singing and making us laugh.

 ಕೆಲ ಸಮಯದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸಾವನದುರ್ಗಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆವು. ಅಲ್ಲಿನ forest guest house ನಲ್ಲಿ ಊಟದ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಆಗಿತ್ತು, ಥಾಂಕ್ಸ್ to ಶ್ರೀಕಾಂತರ barch mate Hosmath ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ಶ್ರೀಮತಿ, ಮಂಗಳಾ.

ಮಧ್ಯಾನ್ಹ ಪೊಗದಸ್ತಾದ ಊಟ ಆದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು ಪಾಲು ಟೀಮ್ members ನಿದ್ದೆಗೆ ಶರಣು. ನಾವು ಕೆಲವು ladies  ಕೂತು ಪಟ್ಟಾಂಗ ಹೊಡೆಯುವ ಸಲುವಾಗಿ ಮರ ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದೆವು. ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಮರದ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಂಚ್ ಗಳಿದ್ದವು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದ ರಾಮಮೂರ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಹಿಷಿ ಯವರೊಂದಿಗೆ, forest guard.. ಬನ್ನಿ ನಿಮಗೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣದೇವರಾಯರ ದರ್ಬಾರ್ hall ತೋರಿಸ್ತೇವೆ ಅಂತ ಕರೆದು ಕೊಂಡು ಹೋದ್ರು. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಒಳದಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಸಾವನದುರ್ಗ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲಿನ ಕೋಟೆ (ಏಳು ಸುತ್ತಿನ ಕೋಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು) ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ತಲುಪುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ದಾರಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಗಿಡ ಗಂಟಿ ಗಳಿಂದ ಮುಚ್ಚಿ ಹೋಗಿತ್ತು. Guard ಗಳು ಮಚ್ಚಿನಿಂದ ದಾರಿ ಮಾಡಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದರೆ, ನಾವು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಜನ ಚಾರಣ ಮಾಡ್ತಾ ಹೊದೆವು. ಅರೆ ಹಿಂದಿನ group ನ ಸದ್ದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. Cell phone ಗೆ ಸಂಪರ್ಕ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಡೀತಾ ತುಂಬಾ ಮೇಲೆ ಹತ್ತಿದೆವು. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿದ್ದು, ಅಲ್ಲಿ ತನಕ ಹೋಗುವ ಆಸೆ ಆಯ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಚಾರಣ ಮೊಟಕು ಗೊಳಿಸಲೇ ಬೇಕಿತ್ತು. ಒಂದು ನಮ್ಮ ಟೀಮ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ನಾವು ಇಷ್ಟು ದೂರ ಬರುವ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಮತ್ತು ನನ್ನ ದಿರಿಸು ಹಾಗೂ ಪಾದುಕೆ (ಪಾದುಕೆ seriously????😊😊)ಬಂಡೆ ಹತ್ತಲು ಸೂಕ್ತವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಏರುತ್ತ, ಜಾರುತ್ತ, ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಬಂಡೆ ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೋರೆದ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳ ಸಹಾಯದಿಂದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಏರಿ ಇಳಿದಾಯ್ತು. ತುಂಬಾ memorable experience.

Guard ಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಸ್ಟೆಪ್ by ಸ್ಟೆಪ್ ಚಿತ್ರ ತೆಗೆದರು.

ಮೆಲುಕು ಹಾಕಲು, ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಜತೆ ಶೇರ್ ಮಾಡಲು ಇಂತಹ ಕೆಲವು ಅನುಭವಗಳು ಬೇಕು ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ. ಮದುವೆಯಾದ 5 ವರ್ಷ , ಕೊಪ್ಪ ದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಗ ನಾವು ವಾರ್ಯಾಂತದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ hiking, biking, trekking ಎಲ್ಲ ನೆನಪಾಯ್ತು.

 ಅಮ್ಮ ಹೇಳ್ತಾರೆ ನಾನು ಮೊದಲನೇ ಹುಟ್ಟುಹಬ್ಬದ ದಿನದಂದು ಟೀ ಕುಡಿಯಲು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದೆ ಎಂದು. ನನಗೆ ಬುದ್ದಿ ಬಂದಾಗಿನಿಂದ ನೆನಪು ಭರ್ ಅಂತ ಉರಿಯುವ ಪಂಪ್ ಸ್ಟವ್ ಹಾಗೂ All India ರೇಡಿಯೋ ಪ್ರೋಗ್ರಾಮ್ ಶುರು ಆಗುವದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಂಚಿನ   Signature tune/ ಸಂಗೀತ ಮತ್ತು ನನ್ನ, ಅಮ್ಮನ ಚಹಾ ಕುಡಿಯುವ ವಾಡಿಕೆ.

ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಟೀ ಕುಡಿಯುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು camaradarie ಇದೆ. ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಟೀ ಕುಡಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆಂದರೆ ಒಂತರಹ ಸಮಾಧಾನ. 

ನಾನು ಜಯನಗರ ಆಫಿಸಿನಿಂದ ಎರಡೆರಡು ಬಸ್ ಬದಲಿಸಿ ಮನೆ ತಲುಪ ಬೇಕಾಗ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆಫಿಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದ್ರಾಶಿ ಟೀ ಕುಡಿದರೂ ಸಹ, ಮನೆ ತಲುಪಿದ ಕೂಡಲೇ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಟೀ ಮಾಡಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ? 

ಹೌದು, ಮಾಲವಿಕಾ ಟೀ ಮಾಡಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೊತ್ತು ಕಾಲು ಚಾಚಿ , ಅವರು ಕಾರ್ಟೂನ್ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ, ನಾನು ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಪರದೆ ಮೇಲೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು (without anything registering on my mind)ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದೆ. (ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಒಗೆಯುವ ಕೆಲಸ ಆಫಿಸಿನಿಂದ ಬಂದು ಮಾಡ್ತಿದ್ದೆ). ಅದು ಒಂದು cozy feeling.

ಒಂದ್ಸಲ ಅಮ್ಮನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ, ಹೀಗೆ ಮಾತಾಡುವಾಗ ,' ನನಗೆ ಕೋಳಿ ನಿದ್ದೆ ಮಾಡಿ, ಸಂಜೆ  ಎದ್ದಾಗ ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಟೀ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಡಬೇಕೆಂದು ಆಸೆ ಆಗ್ತಿತ್ತು' ಅಂದಾಗ ತುಂಬಾ ಬೇಜಾರಾಗಿತ್ತು. ನನ್ನ ಮಕ್ಕಳಷ್ಟು sensibility ನನಗಿಲ್ಲವಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ. ಈಗ ಅಮ್ಮನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲ ಸಂಜೆ ಟೀ ಮಾಡೋದು ಕಡ್ಡಾಯ ನಾನೇ. ತಮ್ಮ ಮುಂಬೈ ನಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದ್ರೆ, ಅದು ಅವನ department.😊

ಈಗ ನಿಹಾ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೆ ಟೆ ಅವಳೇ ಮಾಡುವುದು.

ಮೊನ್ನೆ ಶ್ರೀಕಾಂತ್ ಕಾಲೇಜು ಸಹಪಾಠಿಯರೋ0ದಿಗೆ ಒಂದು day ಟ್ರಿಪ್ ಗೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಸಂಜೆ 'ಎಷ್ಟು ಜನ ಟೀ' ಎಂದಾಗ ಮುಕ್ಕಾಲು ಪಾಲು ಜನ ಕೈ ಎತ್ತಿದಾಗ ಒಂದು ಮುಗುಳು ನಗೆ ಹಾಯ್ದು ಬಂದು ,ಮೇಲಿನದು ನೆನಪಾಯ್ತು.

 ಮಗನಿಗೆ ಸಿಟ್ಟು. ಅವನು ಆಫಿಸಿನಿಂದ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದಾಗಲೆಲ್ಲ ಅವನ ಅಮ್ಮ ಗೋದಡಿ ಹೋಲಿಯುತ್ತಾ ಕುಲುತಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಆರಾಮಾಗಿರುವುದು ಬಿಟ್ಟು , ಅವನ ಅಮ್ಮ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ದಟ್ಟಿ ಹೊಲಿದು ಕೊಡುವುದು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಇರುಸುಮುರುಸಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅವನೇನಾದರೂ ಅಕ್ಸೆಪ ಎತ್ತಿದರೆ ' ಅಡಿಗೆ ಪಡಿಗೆ ಮನೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮುಗಿಸಿಯೇ ಹೋಲಿತೇನೆ, ಏನೀಗ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಅಮ್ಮ.

ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ boutique ಹೋಟೆಲೊಂದು ತಲೆ ಎತ್ತುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಹೋಟೆಲಿನ ಮಾಲೀಕ ಯಾರದೋ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದುಪ್ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಗೋದಡಿ ನೋಡಿ ಎಷ್ಟು ಮಾರು ಹೋದನೆಂದರೆ 50 ದುಪ್ಪಟ್ಟಿಗಳಿಗ order ಕೊಟ್ಟ.

ಕೊರೊನ lock down ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಗನೂ ಅಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಸಾಥ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟ. ಚಳಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿರುವ ಅವರ ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಈಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಬಿಡುವಿಲ್ಲದ ಕೆಲಸ. ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲದೆ 20 ಮಂದಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಕೂಡ ಕೊಡುವಲ್ಲಿ ಶಕ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ

ಕೊರೊನ ಕತೆ.- ಮೀಸೆ

 ಆಕೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಸುಂದರಿ. ಕಣ್ಣು ಮೂಗು ತುಟಿ ಎಲ್ಲಾ. ಆದರೆ ತುಟಿ ಮೇಲಿನ ಮೀಸೆಯಿಂದ ಈ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವೆಲ್ಲ ಮಣ್ಣು ಪಾಲು. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತೆ. ಹಲವು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಕೆಲಸ ನೀಡಲು ತುದಿ ಗಾಲಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದವು. ಆದರೆ interview ಮುಗಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಯಾರೂ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಪುನಃ ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆಯಂತೂ ಮಹಿಳಾ H R ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ಮೀಸೆ ತೆಗೆಸುವ ವಿಧಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದೂ ಇದೆ. ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಅಂತದ್ದರೆಲ್ಲಾ ಆಸಕ್ತಿನೆ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಅಂಥದ್ದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊರೊನಾ ಕಾಲ ಅವಳಿಗೆ ವರದಾನವಾಗಿ ಒದಗಿ ಬಂತು. Interview ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕೆಲಸ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿತು. ಏನಾದರೂ online con call ಇದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವಳು ಮಾಸ್ಕ್ ಕೂಡ ಧರಿಸುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಅವಳ ಅಸಾಧ್ಯ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮತ್ತೆಯಿಂದಾಗಿ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ಅವಳ ಮೀಸೆ ಕಿರಿಕಿರಿ ಅಂತಲೂ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಈಗ

I boarded the 6:50 pm train from Church Gate._

*When the train was about to leave Marine lines, a samosa vendor with an empty basket got on and took the seat next to me.*

_As the compartment was sparsely occupied and my destination was still far away, I got into a conversation with him._

*Me:* _"Seems like you've sold all your samosas today."_

*Vendor (smiling):* _"Yes. By Almighty's grace, full sales today."_

*Me:* _"I really feel sorry for you people. Don't you get tired doing this tiresome job the whole day ?"_

*Vendor:* _"What to do, sir ? Only by selling samosas like this every day do we get a commission of 1 rupee for each samosa that we sell."_

*Me:* _"Oh, is that so ? How many samosas do you sell on an average each day ?"_

*Vendor:* _"On weekdays, we sell 4,000 to 5,000 samosas per day. On an average, we sell about 3,000 samosas a day."_

*I was speechless for a few seconds. The guy says he sells 3,000 samosas a day at a Commission of 1 rupee each. He makes about 3,000 rupees daily, or 90,000 rupees a month.*

*_That's Rs. 90,000 a month. OMG._*

_I intensified my questioning and this time it was not for time pass._

*Me:* _"Do you make the samosas yourself ?"_

*Vendor:* _"No Sir. we get the samosas through a samosa manufacturer and we just sell them. After selling we give him the money and he gives us 1 rupee for each samosa that we sell."_

*I was unable to speak a single word more but the vendor continued...*

_"But one thing, most of our earnings are spent on living expenses here at Bombay. Only with the remaining money are we able to take care of other business."_

*Me:* _"Other business ? What is that ?"_

*Vendor:* _"It is a land business. In 2007 I bought 1.5 acres in Palghar for 10 lakhs and I sold it a few months back for 80 lakhs. Now I have bought land in Umroli for 40 lakhs."_

*Me:* _"What did you do with the remaining amount ?"_

*Vendor:* _"Of the remaining amount, I have set aside 20 lakhs for my daughter's wedding. I have deposited the other 20 lakhs in the Bank, Post Office, Mutual Funds, Gold and bought Cash back Insurance."_

*Me:* _"How much schooling have you had ?"_

*Vendor:* _"I studied up to third standard. I stopped my studies when I was in the 4th standard, but I know how to read and write._

*Sir, there are many people like yourself, who dress well, wear a tie and suit, wear shoes, speak english fluently and work in air-conditioned rooms. But I don't think you guys earn as much as we do wearing dirty clothes and selling samosas."*

_At this point, what could I reply. After all, I was talking to a True Indian Millionaire._

*The train chugged into Khar station and the samosa vendor got up from his seat.*

*Vendor:* _"Sir, this is my station, have a good day."_

*Me:* _"Take care."_

*The questions at the back of my mind.*

_(1) Does the manufacturer pay GST ? (There are more than 10 samosa vendors on the train)_

*(2) Am I a fool, linking my Aadhar card, Pan card, Bank account etc and paying Income Tax by way of deduction at source, buying Car on loan, House on loan, Bike on loan, TVs with EMI, Apple Phone with EMI. 

My EDUCATION has no value against these Samosa Vendor / Manufacturer.*
