rumali roti fiasco

wah re wah dot com

our favorite video which we watch while having breakfast on Sundays, when Srikanth is out of town :-) ;-). if Srikanth is at home he insists we sit down together in the kitchen and have our breakfast/lunch talking discussing joking (which often results in choking). We sit 'down' cos we do not have a dining table. several years ago we donated our dining table. We have gotten so used to sitting down on the floor while having food that we feel awkward to sit at a table. also that is one less thing to worry when shifting houses.
We have breakfast in front of the PC on Sunday also because of the fact that on Sunday there is no 'The Hindu-metro crossword' for us to solve. on weekdays we spread out the newspaper and ourselves on the Kitchen floor and since Niha is a left handed person she fills the crosswords while breakfasting with her right hand ;-) nice naa??
Today morning me and girls attended Dundiraj Bhat's (He is an old friend of Srikanth and therefore mine too) book release programme. Sri Y.V. Gundurao, Sri Dundiraj and Sri H.L. Keshavamurthy had us in splits with fun and pun. and i met my friend Veda for the first time. this post is for her to enjoy when she feels very hungry at the office.
We lunched outside at noon, and tonight  me and akka (malavika)had a try at Roomali Roti. pls watch the video link which i have pasted at the beginning of this post. He is one funny guy. more than trying out his dishes we love watching his antics and listening to his peculiar english!!
Assured by the idea of  the experience of 25years of cooking behind me i thought i could make rumali roti at the first try. so i tried imitating the way he throws the roti into the air... only it got stuck to the kitchen tube light like a chandelier and i had to wait with outstretched palms for it to fall 'like a manna' from above, because the kitchen ceiling is too high and i have to use a ladder to reach up. so my idea was to let it bake slowly from the heat emananting from the tube light before it landed  into my palms....
i aborted the attempt of making the rotis fly and resorted to the time tested method of using the good old rolling pin....but the texture was not the same..cos the maida flour being elastic, shrinks back...with the remaining dough we made parathas.anyways me and akka had good laughs. (Niha is preparing for her semester)we had our paranthas with mushroom masala..it was awesome..While eating we watched old b & w movie 'Seema' (Nutan, Balraj Sahni and Shubha Khote) lovely songs.
Yummy paratha and Mushroom Masala
and to go along with this Malavika prepared a cocum drink
Crushed ice, cocum syrup (from Goa), pinch of salt, pinch of rock salt and Sprite...
Photographs as usual by Niharika on Akka's cell phone. Camera with Srikanth for he is again on one of his tours.........hope he is jealous seeing the photographs of the awesome Paratha and the side dish.
One more fun sunday. today is daughters day and we enjoyed it to the HILT. Love you Akka and Nimpu.

    Don't try it again!!!!

  6. sitting down for having food is some how impossible for me, Malathi avare!

actually, Sunday Prajavani - Sapthahika magazine's cross word is super and tough for me. Madam U shall try it.

I love the hanigavana's of Dundi Raj, HLK and Gundurao. Their poetical humor is superb.

I will watch the video clip in my system. Right now my mobile wouldn't support playing videos.

Rumali Roti baking by a tube light is new idea! hahaha....

    parata with mushroom masala. waw...

    Nice post Malathi avare.
